Tennessee High School Rugby was started in 2001 by several former Collegiate and Men's Club Players in Middle TN. After the 1st year - both East and West TN wanted to get in on growing the game and by 2004 both were fully involved with enough programs of their own to create three independent Conferences.
The Conferences created were:
EAST - Smokey Mountain Athletic Conference or "SMAC"
MIDDLE - Middle Tennessee Rugby Conference or "MTRC"
WEST - Western Rugby Conference or "WEST"
In 2010 new By-Laws were developed and the State Organization (now recognized by US Y&HS Rugby as an SYRO or State-based Youth Rugby Organization) was renamed the Tennessee Rugby Association or TRA.
