Kutztown Downs Maryland
Paced by four tries from Hawaiian product and former HS All American Nu’u Aiava, Kutztown defeated Maryland 48-20 in a non-conference game between two highly-ranked teams.
The Bears put intense defensive pressure on the Terps, and that left flyhalf Ben Cima with little option but to kick. The problem was, he kicked to the Kutztown backline, and they punished the Terrapins throughout the first half, with Aiava doing much of the damage with his speed and shifty running. Back from injury, Alex Faison-Donahoe scored a try, captain Trent Huizenga, and Johan van Wyk also touched down.
Halftime the score was 43-6, with Maryland getting two penalty kicks from Cima.
In the second half, Cima started kicking more to the corner away from Kutztown players, and that set them up to put the Bears under more pressure. As a result, Matius Cima and Jonathon Brucia both touched down for Maryland to get it to 43-20 before Kutztown scored once more.
This was a non-conference game, and an important once for both. For KU it was a big day to show they can win without Robert Stortz, who cruelly injured his MCL after coming back from a series of knee injuries. And with lock Nick Hohlt also out with a knee injury, they showed they have the depth to beat a ranked opponent.
