The USA women’s 7s team ended the World Series season as Plate Runners-Up and 2-4 in Clermont-Ferrand.
The Eagles did not achieve what should have been their goals, losing fairly convincingly (twice) to England, losing to Spain, and, in the Plate Final, losing to France.
When colleges started playing serious 7s rugby, everyone assumed Saint Mary’s would be good at it; and so the Gaels were, but at the same time, they never won a national title.
They came close - finishing second in 2011 and usually pushing for a spot in the semis or winning the Plate. But Sunday, Saint Mary’s won it all.
The University of Minnesota-Duluth Fighting Penguins are now double champions, as they took the national DII 7s championships on Sunday.
The Annual Memorial Day Sevens Festival took place in Alpharetta, Ga. on Saturday in a variety of age-grade brackets.
The teams enjoyed perfect weather and played in front of a large crowd. Phoenix Rugby of Alpharetta won the HS division, beating the North Carolina All Stars 68-12 in the final.
Weather forced early kickoffs for the playoff rounds of the USA Rugby College 7s Championships, with most brackets finishing off in the morning, before the rains really came.
