Woodlands Girls Dominate in Texas
Woodlands Girls Dominate in Texas
Woodlands ran through a 19-1 season to win the Rugby Texas girls championship this past weekend, defeating rivals North Texas for the title.
North Texas was the only team to have beaten Woodlands in the Rugby Texas series of 7s tournaments this spring, taking down the Houston-area team 19-17 on April 10. Their only other meeting was also 19-17, this time in favor of the Woodlands back in February.
From 2019-2021, the Woodlands HS Girls have a combined record of 52-4-1. This season Woodlands scored 588 points, about 37 per game, and gave up about eight points per game, recording four shutouts. And in the final they blazed past North Texas 31-5.
Led by some superb work for Aubrey Crist (headed to Davenport), Dylan Kipp (headed to University of British Columbia, and Sam Houston State-headed Marlee Steele and Kim Buckwalter, Woodlands dominated the Texas scene this year. Juniors Asha Jarusinski and Grace Macune have also been very effective, and those two, along with Crist, played with the Gorilla Rugby select side at the Tropical 7s.
The season isn't over for Woodlands. They will play in the Rock Rugby Tournament May 29 and then go on to the Falcon 7s tournament in Little Rock, Ark, where they are looking forward to a clash with another well-regarded girls program in the Charlotte Tigress.
