WIIL Looks to Big 2015 Fall
The WIIL Men's DII collegiate rugby conference has settled its schedule for the fall of 2015.
The conference now covers teams in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Iowa, with the addition in the South Division of Northern Iowa - switching over from the Northern Lights - and Lindenwood-Belleville, a brand-new program starting this season.
UNI was the #2 team in the Northern Lights, and played off with WIIL #2 UW-Stout for a place in the 2014 Men's DII Round of 16, losing 27-12. They then announced a move to the WIIL saying in a Facebook post that the WIIL would offer tougher competition week-to-week. UNI went 6-1 in the Northern Lights in 2014, losing 67-10 to eventual national champs Minnesota-Duluth, but beating all but Winona but large margins (as large as 111 points).
With Northern Iowa joining the likes of national runners up Wisconsin-Whitewater, the WIIL now has six teams that were in the final Goff Rugby Report Top 50. That list may expand was the season progresses. Lindenwood-Belleville is a new varsity program, which is young, but should get good in a hurry.
Whitewater (#2 last year) opens the season September 12 against UW-Platteville, ranked #41 at the end of the 2014 fall season. Lindenwood Belleville opens against Illinois State, #13 last year.
The season lasts through October 24, with the playoffs starting October 31.
Below is the schedule, with home teams listed first. On October 3, UW-Stout actually hosts UW-Whitewater, not the other way around. Click image to enlarge.
