Who Leads the Way in NACR D2?
University of New Hampshire is currently the only team that is 209 in the NACR after they just barely edged past Coast Guard Academy 7-5.
That was a a major early-season clash Friday night and it's pretty clear that these two teams are very close. Still, UNH won by a conversion and go to 2-0. Coash Guard gets a close-loss bonus point so they're not too far away.
"It was probably one of the craziest games I have ever seen us play in my four years with the team," said UNH's Tyler Beresford. "It was physical from the start and we had really good line speed; so did Coast Guard. We got held up at the tryline two or three times—we were getting there but we just couldn't finish."
Norwich rebounded from an opening-week loss to Vermont with a 48-7 defeat of Maine.
It took a while for Norwich to get going but midway through the first half Logan Perry's try opened it up. Maine, and it wasn't really until the second half that Norwich was able to break away. Blake Wolliston raced through from 50 meters out, to go with tries from Joe Whiteside and Arnaud Germain to cap it off.
Norwich plays UNH next week.
Two other teams are unbeaten, but have only played the one game. And in a nice little gift to fans they play each other next week. Vermont beat Norwich last week and had a bye this week. After no game in the opening weekend, UMass Lowell beat Boston University 50-5.
The Riverhawks started the match well with a Victor Melenciano try off a pick-and-go five minutes in. Jon Brabo and Liam Collins scored to build on that and they each ended up with two tries. Hard running Colin Griffiths scored three times and was player of the game, bolstering his case with some impressive defense. Brabo converted five of the eight tries for a total of 20 points.
Keep an eye on Jordan Strauss who could emerge as an impact rugby rookie.
Next week, then, BU will be looking for their first win at a Coast Guard side that has a good chance to stay in the mix. Norwich is at UNH while Lowell welcomes Vermont.
