Western Michigan, Bowling Green To MAC Final
Bowling Green will face off with Western Michigan in the final of the Mid-American Conference after both won semifinals Saturday in convincing fashion.
WMU slammed IUPUI 52-14, starting quickly and scoring five converted tries in the first half to lead 35-0. Wing Reginald Ealy and prop Ivan Delgado scored tries in the first 15 minutes, and then it became the Justice Delli Bovi show, as the WMU second row thundered over for three tries. Flanker Daniel Howard converted all five.
IUPUI did get two tries, including a penalty try, but two scores from flanker Joseph Backe, and two conversions and a penalty from Howard capped it off for the Broncos. Howard ended up with 17 points.
BGSU, meanwhile, took some time to get rolling, but eventually took down Louisville 49-14. Louisville has beaten Bowling Green earlier in the season, but this rematch brought a completely different outcome. Jacob Roberts scored to give Bowling Green a 5-0 lead, but the Falcons didn't expand on that until 27 minutes into the game. Flyhalf Robert Kirskin zipped over, with Ryan Neimiller adding the extras for a 12-0 lead.
Then things went from bad to much worse for the Cardinals, as they suffered a red card and went down a player for the rest of the match. Center Mark Steinmetz scored right after that, but Louisville rebounded and scored to make it 19-7 at the break.
Bowling Green extended their lead right after halftime with lock Sam Ciancutti going over. Moments later his second row mate Mason Carriero was over and it was 29-7 Falcons. Two yellow cards against Bowling Green in the final ten minutes slowed down the Falcons' onslaught, and Louisville had the last word with a try, but by then Roberts and Levi Muter had also scored. Final score Bowling Green 41, Louisville 14.
It was a big day for Roberts, who scored two tries, including one from a Bowling Green scrum five meters from their own line when he raced 95 meters. Four weeks ago, Roberts was playing C-side for Bowling Green, and is now a playoff hero.
Bowling Green and Western Michigan play Sunday for the Conference Championship. WMU beatBowling Green 24-17 on September 28, but it has happened before that Western has won the regular-season clash only to lose in the championship game.
