The West Coast D1A teams are starting to play and this week a couple of teams looked for some competition outside of the division.

Sacramento State has a young squad with 14 incoming freshman (and a couple of transfers) that Head Coach Steve Seifert is enthusiastic about, but he wanted to avoid throwing them into the deep end immediately. So the Hornets took on a strong D1AA team in San Jose State.

The upshot was an entertaining contest that Sac State won 47-33.

"San Jose State is a good team and it was a tough game," said Seifert. But the young players did well for the Hornets. Seifert started eight freshmen, the lion's share from Jesuit HS in Sacramento.

"The freshmen performed well," said Seifert, who saw most of his try-scorers being first-year players—Barrett Saich (freshman from Jesuit), Atalea Tua (freshman from East Palo Alto), Devin Pointes (freshman from Carmichael Hawks), Owen Lee (freshman from Chico), Joe Kungys (freshman from Jesuit), Trevaun Robinson (transfer from ARC), and Isaia-Angel Porter (freshman from St. Francis) all scored tries.

Meanwhile, further north, Western Washington played University of Victoria. UVic played their first side against Trinity Western, so this was a younger group hosting WWU. The teams entered halftime tied 21-21, and then WWU pulled away with a 26-7 second half to win 47-28.

Tighthead prop Kellen La Fave was a powerful presence in traffic, while Bryn Jones (a transfer from Sac State) was very good at flyhalf and converted five of six conversions. Fergus Moore led the team in tackles and also scored.

WWU traveled three teams on October 10, one team going to Victoria, BC, the B side played United Academy, in Coquitlam, BC, and their 3rd side played the Snohomish County Rhinos.
