The University of Washington men's rugby program is seeking a new Head Coach as current Head Coach Will Wheaton is stepping into a Director of Rugby role as he is becoming a father.

The Husky Rugby program was established in 1963 and is part of a top publish research institution in Seattle, Wash. It boast a large and diverse student body from around the USA and internationally, and the rugby program has a strong alumni base.

UW Rugby competes in CRAA's D1AA in the Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference (NCRC).

The program had successes in the 2025-26 season, not in the win column but in terms of executing a tour of California and with nine players on scholarship.

However, Wheaton was not happy about the 1-13 record. But, again, the positives include the fact that they played 14 games, and that their second team went 8-2.

“No Head Coach wants to end his tenure on such a monumental losing record," said Wheaton. "With a large senior class, and nine 1st- and 2nd-year players on scholarship, prospects were good. Early injuries to key players and captains, without enough experienced depth to weather it, put us on a very challenging trajectory. Losses in our exhibition matches were expected with 4 D1A opponents between Fall and Winter quarters, but the in-conference losses were unexpected. Many were close, some got away from us."

However, "the win-loss record for our 2nd XV is promising, with growing depth and experience. Our scholarshipped players have been injured on average for over half of our season, so we have never seen them all on the field together. I expect that the next head coach will build the program around these players who will be entering years 2 and 3. As Director of Rugby, I will work with the Head Coach on recruitment for the following year.ˮ

The program is seeking a Head Coach to elevate athletic performance, build a recruiting pipeline, develop the student-athletes already there, and work with the alumni, student leadership, and DOR Wheaton.

Applicants should submit their resume, statement of coaching philosophy, references, and a sample training plan to Kevin Fuller at president@huskyrugby.com
