USA Retain NACRA Shutout v Barbados
There was no easing of the gas pedal in the USA Women 7s team’s 74-0 win over Barbados. The Eagles have outscored opponents 119-0 after two rounds of the NACRA 7s Olympic qualifier.
The opening kickoff was a prelude of things to come, as Kate Zachary received the kick and turned the corner with no resistance for a long-range try. That said, the USA did well to turn over rucks and challenge the restarts, resulting in a wealth of possession with which to play. The epitome of such physicality was Joanne Fa’avesi, who set up a memorable try after making three consecutive tackles – one off of the restart, the second on a slow outlet pass, and the third on the offload. Kelly Griffin then stole the ball in contact, and the ball moved wide to wing Kristen Thomas for the second of her two tries.
The USA continued to run some nice support lines that resulted in scores. Hannah Lopez sped through a Melissa Fowler offload on the sideline; and Kelly Griffin changed direction off a Fa’avesi quick-tap break. Lauren Doyle put in a couple of good sidesteps to stall defenders out wide for two tries, as well.
Even though the Eagles had established a healthy 33-0 lead at the break, the team pushed its performance until the final whistle, adding another 41 points in the second stanza. The final score occurred with no time on the clock, as replacement scrumhalf Dana Meschisi dove over the try line for her second score of the day.
Barbados didn't have much time with ball in hand; however, the team did rein in its restart receipts a little better than first-round opponent Jamaica (read more) and also accounted for the first linebreak - a hearty tear through the middle, which Lopez took down - against the Eagles.
All told, nine players scored tries, while Kelter and Lopez added the extras. The USA will finish pool play against the Cayman Islands at 4:26 p.m. ET.
