The USA Men's 7s team is set to play in the International Rugby Sevens May 15-18 in St. George’s Park in England.
Head Coach Mike Friday has picked 14 players to be led by captain Madison Hughes. The event will be held behind closed doors with all matches streamed on England Rugby’s Facebook Page. Carlin Isles, who hadn't been seen on the USA squad for a while, is back in the lineup, and Friday has once again decided to mix up his squad with young players, and players hoping to break into the Olympic squad with veterans, while also saving some other veterans for later dates.
Held just months before the Tokyo Olympics, the International 7s marks another step in preparation before the squad departs for Japan. Following this event, the USA Men’s Sevens will have one more competitive training to be held in Los Angeles from June 25-26. Details for LA will be announced in the coming weeks.
“As a group we look forward to competing in the UK against quality international opposition in Team GB and Ireland," said USA Head Coach Mike Friday. "This gives us another opportunity to play while dealing with the same distractions we’ll have in Tokyo with overseas logistics and protocols. Overall, this event will give us a good indication of how we are tracking both physically and from a rugby perspective. It will no doubt highlight areas where we need to adapt and also give us affirmation as we enter the home stretch in our preparation for the Olympics.”
