USA into Bowl Final

The USA is into the Bowl Final at the Tokyo 7s after two dominant performances.

The Eagles enjoyed a huge game against Portugal, winning 39-0 on the back of seven tries and two conversions. Folau Niua was back in the lineup and he was clearly eager to make an impact.  Niua broke through to score the opening try, and another break set up the second one.

The Eagles did well to use their power runners - Danny Barrett, Andrew Durutalo, and Garrett Bender - to score tries. Maka Unufe and Madison Hughes both showed their pace. And Tai Leuta scored the last try of the game to notch his first ever in World Series rugby.

That game set up a clash with Samoa in the Bowl Semifinals. The Eagles fell behind 5-0 after a series of errors allowed Samoa to punish them, but then Madison Hughes, who has had a very strong tournament, raced in from long range. Up 7-5 the USA managed to sneak one more try in, as Bender garnered the attention of several defenders, allowing Carlin Isles to pick up from the ruck and jog in.

Isles scored the next try, too, and then the icing on the cake was Danny Barrett catching the kickoff in the air and running in.

That sets up a Bow Final game with Australia at 12:35am PT / 3:35am ET.

Notes: Zack Test did not start for the USA against Samoa. It's unclear whether he is injured. Isles leads the tournament with six tries. Canada upset New Zealand in the Cup Quarterfinals. The USA will move past Argentina into 6th in the standings, as Argentina has had a poor Tokyo 7s.
