Urban Rugby Championship 2024 To Be Held in Washington DC
The 3rd Annual Urban Rugby Championship will be held in 2024 in Washington DC from March 5-9.
Qualifying programs from across the country will gather in the name of equity, access, and opportunity through rugby.
In its third edition, the event is poised to continue on its groundbreaking trajectory and deliver on its promise to create a transformative experience for the players, programs, and community it gathers. The URC subsidizes travel, delivers resources and unites affiliate organizations to ensure black and brown student-athletes from under-resourced communities can access what is headed towards becoming the premier rugby competition on American soil.
In 2022, Dallas Youth Rugby secured the URC Belt in Memphis, Tenn., while in 2023, an exceedingly rare weather phenomenon in Los Angeles, Calif. prevented the finals from taking place.
During the 2024 event rugby athletes, mentors, and ambassadors will pay a visit to Howard University, engaging with students and imparting their enthusiasm for the sport. Motivational talks and workshops will be conducted to invigorate and inspire the upcoming generation of black and brown collegiate rugby players.
There will also be an engagement event with elementary and junior high schools. This initiative aims to introduce rugby to young children with representative near-peers and increase awareness around our sport.
Players will also exploring important Washington DC sites, touring the city and building new perspectives and connections while exploring the complicated and rich history of our nation's capital.
The culmination of the championship week will unfold on Saturday, March 9 with a day-long 7s tournament.
Rugby teams from across the nation will showcase their prowess and vie for the title, competing in the only space in American rugby dedicated to promoting, empowering and celebrating black and brown students from under-resourced communities.
"We are ecstatic to bring the Urban Rugby Championship to Washington DC," Kevin Battle, the event's organizer, said. "Our mission has consistently revolved around utilizing rugby to inspire, educate, and empower youth in underserved communities. This year's championship guarantees an even more significant impact, with visits to local universities, elementary and middle schools, and significant city landmarks, culminating in a thrilling all-day 7's tournament."
The Urban Rugby Championship is made possible by the generous backing of its sponsors and partners, who share the same commitment to community advancement and youth empowerment. For more details regarding Urban Rugby Championship 2024 and ways to participate, please visit www.urbanrugby.org.
