Union Claims Oklahoma
It’s another Oklahoma state championship for the Union boys HS club, as the Tula-based team defeated Bixby 45-13 in the final this past weekend.
This is the third straight state title for Union, and their seventh in the 17-year history of Rugby Oklahoma’s HS championship. Union never trailed in the game, and were led by lock Austin Barnes, who was a force in the lineout, and prop Chance Wengelewski, who held up the scrum and showcased an impressive work rate in the breakdowns and in the open field.
As usual, HS All American No. 8 Malon Al-Jiboori got his team going forward.
“We had really good go-forward from all of our forwards,” said Union Coach Jason Todd. “It was a stellar effort from the pack. Bixby is a good team - they won the St. Louis Ruggerfest and made us work for everything. We knew if we made mistakes they would hurt us.”
This caps off an undefeated league season for Union, and now they look ahead to a 7s summer. There is also rumors of a possible Red River clash between Union and Texas champion Westlake, but that is unconfirmed.
