UMW Notches Win Over Mount St. Mary's
In a clash of two D1A Rugby East teams moving up the ladder, Mary Washington defeated Mount St. Mary's 39-20.
Mount entered the game 2-0 in Rugby East having beaten Southern Virginia and Kutztown, while UMW entered 0-1 after losing to Life last week. UMW had the ball in hand the majority of the first half and the Mount played tenacious defense, enduring as much as 20 straight minutes of pressure without allowing a point. Mount punished UMW's indiscipline and that led to two penalties and a converted try for a 13-8 lead.
In the second half it was like a switch was turned on for Mary Washington. Former high school teammates and UMW centers Sebastian Schefermann and Stuart Duncan were all over the field, both on offense and defense. UMW’s pack came alive and showed their fitness, with prop Cameron Giwa, flanker Lloyd Stephens, and NO. 8 Nick Ball doing some hard work between tackles.
UMW stabilized their lineouts and Nick Ball and lock Bobby Mulvey started to win throws, while flanker Jackson Elder played some serious defense and was very effective in loose play.
UMW outscored Mount 31-7 in the 2nd half and a lot of credit can be given to UMW’s reserves, bringing a spark that helped Marty Washington take the game.
The game ended with hooker Tom Williams bulldozing his way into the try zone off a maul and Sebastian Schefermann sailing his kick through the posts.
Final Score UMW 39, Mount St. Mary's 20.
In the second game, which was no less exciting, UMW overcame an early deficit to rally for the win, 29-23. Hooker Matthews Clint paced them with his running
