U20s Back on Winning Track
Paced by two tries from captain Hanco Germishuys, the USA U20s came away with a 32-12 victory over Hong Kong at the World Rugby U20 Trophy Saturday in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The Junior All Americans put wing Travis Heer (Lindenwood) over in the early going and Ben Cima (Maryland and Rocky Gorge) converted to make it 8-0 (please note the tournament is using a law variation where tries are worth 6 and penalty kicks worth only 2). Hong Kong replied to make it 8-6, but a try from Gemishuys provided a ten-point halftime cushion at 16-6.
In the second half the teams battled back and forth. The young MJAA team was holding on with their captain in the sin bin. But once Germishuys returned and Head Coach JD Stephenson brought on some fresh legs, the Americans caught a spark. Germishuys got his second - making it five so far in the tournament - and then Malon Al-Jiboori scored the all-important bonus-point try.
Pool B is already looking to be an intriguing group as Spain took care of Namibia - the team that beat the USA in the opening round. That's good news for the USA as the Eagles hold their destiny in their hands. A victory over Spain, then, should put the USA into the championship game.
