Texas State, SHSU Keep Winning In Lonestar
Texas State moved to 5-0 in the Lonestar Tier 2 South and Sam Houston State remained undefeated in Tier 1 after wins this past weekend.
Texas State got an early try from scrumhalf Matthew Lester and punished a pair of Prairie View A&M yellow card with two-five-pointers (lfyhalf Nicholas Smith and hooker Patrick Sanchez) for a 19-0 lead after 25 minutes.
Prairie View fought back and scrumhalf Tre Carter’s score make it a two-score game. But Texas State center Trenton Erickson answered five points with five points and the Bobcats held on.
Prairie View did score twice around halftime, loose forwards Paris Johnson and Brandon Udeme doing the honors, but Texas State settled down, played some defense in the second half, and got a try from Jordan Wander to finish the game off 29-19.
This was the closest game of the season for Texas State, which now sits 5-0 and looks ahead perhaps to the challenge of Stephen F. Austin, which leads the Tier 2 North with a 5-0 record and three games to go.
Meanwhile, Sam Houston State leads the Tier 1 DIAA league after beating Dallas 59-19. Flyhalf Rich Howell scored 19 points with a try and seven conversions. Lock George Newbold added two tries, as did fullback Montria Brown, while flanker Blake Powell, prop Alec Williams, wing Wade Borrer, and hooker Joshua Lowe all added a try apiece.
With one game left in the regular season, SHSU is virtually assured of finishing 1st in the standings over UT San Antonio, a team Sam Houston beat 40-34 in the fall.
