Tennessee continued their impressive run with a 39-22 defeat of Kentucky Saturday, taking down the two-time defending SCRC and NCR D1AA champions in the process.

In a close match Tennessee was able to pull away late in the game.

The teams battled to a 22-22 tie score after the Kentucky forwards crashed over. Then about seven minutes into the second half, Kentucky had the ball and was working through phases in the middle of the field when they were penalized for a double movement.

Tennessee took the lineout close to the Wildcat tryline. Their first maul was taken down, but on the second penalty the Vols popped the ball off the back to center Niko Zaharas, who sidestepped his way over the line.

The score remained 27-22 as Tennessee managed to drag down freshman Colin Spellacy, who had already scored a try on the day, on a break.

With less than 10 minutes to go Tennessee got a penalty at midfield for offside. A superb kick to touch put them in excellent scoring position and the forwards powered it over from there.

That made it a two-score game at 32-22. Kentucky still had time ... barely.

But they committed another avoidable penalty, and Tennessee kicked for touch again, made territory again, and the forwards bashed it over ... again.

And that was it. For Tennessee Head Coach Scott Tungay this was an important game because it gave his side a bye to the quarterfinals, while Kentucky has to play someone next week.

But they were going to be ready regardless.

"Our priority this year was making sure we got our best guys to the playoffs," said Tungay, who only had one potential starter, prop Leo Bonifacio, out of the lineup.

"Pretty much the rest of my guys were available for selection and it showed in the quality of our subs who came on and finished out the game for us," said Tungay. "I'm pleased for my seniors, we won the SCRC in their freshman year, and for them to bookend their UT career with a 2nd win is huge for us. We made a few mistakes that Kentucky punished. So we will clean those areas up going forward. But for the most part we managed to hit Kentucky hard phase after phase and play 'test match' rugby when it counted."
