Temple Upset Highlights Keystone QFs
Of the three Keystone Conference playoff games played Saturday, certainly the Temple v Pitt matchup was the most intriguing.
While Rutgers thrashed Lock Haven 96-0, and West Chester took care of Millersville 68-13, the #3-seed Temple upset #2-seed Pitt 38-31.
It was indeed a bit of shocker, given that Pitt almost beat St. Joseph's to win the Keystone West. But given that Temple's 1-2 record included losses by six and two points, respectively, maybe it shouldn't have been that much of a surprise.
"We went into the game feeling fairly confident," said Temple club president Mike Wellstein. "We knew that we hadn't played to the level we were capable of. We lost those league games because we were beating ourselves. So we went into this game knowing we had nothing to lose."
Pitt caused Temple plenty of problems, with prop Chris Johnson and center Mike Dunleavy making breaks and challenging tacklers. But Temple had some standout payers of their own, especially prop Josh Pedrow, fullback Joseph Kennedy, and wing Jeremy Ault.
"The big thing for us was developing our continuity," said Wellstein, who plays flanker. "We lost some players to graduation and we needed to come together. We start the semester late and the early part of the season is tough. But we're coming together and getting used to each other, and you can see that. Pitt is always ready to play, but we were ready."
The fourth playoff game will be played this coming weekend, when St. Joe's hosts Viillanova. Then the conference will finish up a week later with the semis and final.
