Tempe Impresses Again
Tempe Impresses Again
Tempe built on last week's win over San Clemente with a workmanlike defeat of Salpointe Catholic in Arizona league play.
After a slow start, Tempe started to use its physical and elusive attackers and ran out 51-7 winners.
The Jr. Devils committed to many handling errors and the cold weather didn’t help, but they also ran out of their structured play somewhat. The slow start prompted players to play a little loose with the ball, making some questionable passes and trying to make up for said slow start with too much individual play instead of taking the rucks and recycling.
After they embraced the pattern and with some U16 players coming in off the bench, Tempe settled down. Dietrich Abinet was impressive on attack and combined nicely with Alejandro Echavarria, while the Tempe pack won several scrums against the head, which made up for some lineout issues. Prop Luke Schaefer was outstanding for Tempe.
Salpointe had some excellent moments and players hard throughout. Senior flyhalf Jesus Zacarias was their best player with flankers Cameron Myers and Christian Sandoval, both freshmen, put in a full day's work.
