Carmel repeated as Rugby Indiana girls 7s champions, putting together an impressive run in the final two games, beating Westfield 27-10 in the semis and longtime rivals Chargers 31-12.

"We've got a great group of girls," said Head Coach Tayler Wiggs. "They've been together for a while and they execute well. We were fortunate to have enough players for two sides through the season, and that allowed us to mix players and try some things, bringing the younger players up while mixing with the older players."

In the final tournament at the Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Ind., Carmel fielded one side and this was a group that understood the value of teamwork.

"We play as a team," said Wiggs. "We train as a team and we play as a team. They've all played with different players so they understand what it takes to play together."

Wiggs has worked hard with these players, players who have spent a long time together, to build their rugby IQ. Rugby Indiana makes it easy to take referee courses so Wiggs encouraged her players to take the referee course. Taking the course gives players a new perspective and a deeper understanding of the game.

Led by the captaincy trio of Julian Ilardi, Lilly Palmer, and Saige Hurst, Carmel kept the focus, and Wiggs said they needed that leadership in the semifinal against Westfield.

"They kept the players grounded," said Wiggs.
