Loyola Marymount’s win over Claremont Colleges is a good reminder that LMU is on a bit of a comeback trail.
The Los Angeles-based college looked solid in a 40-19 defeat of CC. Fullback Cole Conforti scored two tries in the game, as did wing Danny Childs. Centers Brad Aryeh and Philip Mitselmakher scored one each, and Brennan Curulla did well with a 5-for-6 day on kicking from the tee.
“In my time with Loyola Rugby at LMU we've gone from GCCIR Division III to CRAA D1AA, so it's definitely been a wild ride, and for many teams we've kind of come out of nowhere,” said scrumhalf and captain Carson Cabrera, who gives a lot of credit to the team’s new coaching staff of Cristian Rodriguez, Todd Clever, and Ray Thompson, along with four alumni skills coaches.
They have ambitious goals, and the players have responded.
“Every year we've faced stronger competition, and we show up with a complex scheme that allows our players to show how talented they are,” said Cabrera. “I can only hope that we continue to stay healthy and bring the fight to every team in the Southwest this year.”
