Loyola Marymount’s win over Claremont Colleges is a good reminder that LMU is on a bit of a comeback trail.

The Los Angeles-based college looked solid in a 40-19 defeat of CC. Fullback Cole Conforti scored two tries in the game, as did wing Danny Childs. Centers Brad Aryeh and Philip Mitselmakher scored one each, and Brennan Curulla did well with a 5-for-6 day on kicking from the tee.

“In my time with Loyola Rugby at LMU we've gone from GCCIR Division III to CRAA D1AA, so it's definitely been a wild ride, and for many teams we've kind of come out of nowhere,” said scrumhalf and captain Carson Cabrera, who gives a lot of credit to the team’s new coaching staff of Cristian Rodriguez, Todd Clever, and Ray Thompson, along with four alumni skills coaches.

They have ambitious goals, and the players have responded.

“Every year we've faced stronger competition, and we show up with a complex scheme that allows our players to show how talented they are,” said Cabrera. “I can only hope that we continue to stay healthy and bring the fight to every team in the Southwest this year.”

Along with his goalkicking Curulla at flyhalf has emerged as a smart play caller with confidence despite being a sophomore.

“He puts us in position to win,” said Cabrera.

“I think we’re just becoming a rugby team in general,” added Rodriguez. “When I took over we lacked rugby experience, so we had to focus a lot on turning the athletes into rugby players. This year we’re finally able to focus on actually playing rugby and following our structure.”

Rodriguez also points to what Curulla has been able to do, and he brings in Cabrera into that spotlight.

“They are running the show this year and our #13 Brad Aryeh is an absolute beast.”
After the good start, LMU of course gets a bye weekend before looking ahead to USC on February 14. If, on that weekend, Arizona State beats Claremont Colleges, we will be all set up for a clash of unbeatens between Loyola Marymount and Arizona State in Tempe.
