St. Thomas of Houston got by Strake Jesuit 28-17 in the Texas Varsity semifinals Friday.

They await the winner of Celina and Dallas Jesuit.

This was a very well-attended match and carried with it some of that classic Texas HS sports atmosphere.

Freshman lock Zane Murray got St. Thomas going with a try within two minutes, but after that it was an almighty tussle.

Strake scored via Nicholas Startling and Fran Moretti; St. Thomas answered, and it wasn't until a try right before halftime that St. Thomas got the lead back.

With this being a playoff game, composure and scoreboard discipline is hugely important, and St Thomas was able to build in their 15-12 lead with the goalkicking of hooker Jacob Ramos, who slotted penalties at 45 and 50 minutes.

So that made it 21-12. Strake brought it closer with a try from Gabriel del Almo. But as time whittled down, St. Thomas fullback Gavin Burford sold a dummy and raced in to, along with the conversion from Ramos, seal the victory.

This was a massive performance from the St. Thomas forwards, who had been a big part of the earlier match between the two, a month ago, which St. Thomas won by two.

Along with Ramos and Burford, St. Thomas leaned heavily on outside back Xander Young, who was a serious thorn in Strake's side.

Celina defeated HEB Saturday 63-0, paced by Ruan Minaar. Along with Dallas Jesuit, Celina is favored to get through the playoffs from the North.
