St. Ignatius Over Aspetuck
In a bit of a statement result #1-ranked school team St. Ignatius defeated #7 club team Aspetuck 45-14 Saturday.
Aspetuck provided a stern test for the Wildcats and got two spectacular tries from flyhalf Pearson Hill, but found difficult exerting control over Ignatius in tight.
"Pearson Hill is a stud; he was the best player on the pitch," said St. Ignatius Head Coach Dan Arbeznik. "We didn’t even give him an inch. We have four guys in a wall against him and he steps one way pushes off another guy and has a sliver of space and takes it and he's gone. He scored two tries that way."
But with John Reddy making the gainline almost every time he took the ball up and the halfback combo of Sean Lipaj and Bobby Voth making gains with the boot and moving the ball to runners, Ignatius was too much.
The Wildcats made mistakes—three knock-ons in the maul will not make them happy and were probably due to Aspetuck captain and prop Matt Weiner delivering some thumping defense. But the bench showed well once again with Tom Wasinski coming on to deliver tackle after tackle. Noah Norris also was a defensive standout. Joey Georges scored two tries in the backs.
But they forced every Aspetuck player to make tackles and spread the field well.
"Some things were clicking for us," said Arbeznik. "Quick ball really good for us and we were able to find gaps.
