South Meck, Charlotte Catholic to NC School Final
South Meck garnered revenge over Hough in the North Carolina Single-School league semis with a 24-20 victory to book a spot in next week's final.
Having lost to Hough 34-14 earlier this season, South Meck had some work to do in order to get the win and Head Coach Rick Norvell said that is exactly what his players did.
"All credit to me boys," he told GRR. "They worked to get here."
The difference, said Norvell, was plying with cool heads and with focus. They faster this time around and focused well on defense.
"My boys are really, really tough and they worked super hard to get to his point," added Norvell. "I've coached a handful of the kids on this team since middle school."
Jackson Wilseon, Jameson Beatty, Quinn Miller, and Aiden Galant were all outstanding on the day as South Meck scored in the closing moments to win it.
No 8 Kai Campbell was once again massive for Hough, scoring two tries.
Hough Head Coach Bruce Colson was magnanimous in defeat, wishing both finalists luck.
"I think the lads showed great heart and just fell short," he added. "But I am proud of the effort right up to the end. We'll be back next year!"
South Meck will take on Charlotte Catholic, which continued its undefeated rugby with a 31-14 victory over Marvin Ridge.
It was a solid showing from Charlotte Catholic. They led 31-7 until late in the game and were in relatively control most of the evening.
"The boys played really well," said CC Head Coach Jason Zehmke. "Credit to Marvin Ridge, who really brought it to us. I thought we were much better on the outside, with our edges playing with much more confidence. Outside center Billy Bambrick, and wings Jack McFee and Nolan Winslow really put in the effort."
Charlotte Catholic improves to 7-0. That includes a very difficult 26-24 victory over South Meck on January 17. That scoreline suggests a very tense final next week with neither team going in as favorite.
