South Carolina Wins 2nd 7s Tournament in a Row

For the second tournament in a row, the University of South Carolina has won a Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference 7s tournament, and for the second weekend in a row, the Gamecocks defeated Tennessee to do it.

USC won their pool by defeating Georgia and Vanderbilt, while Tennessee defeated Auburn and Mississippi State in their two pool games - the second game, though, being a tight 21-20 affair.

That set up the quarterfinals where Tennessee held off Florida 34-19 and South Carolina shut out Auburn 41-0. On to the semis where the Volunteers beat Alabama 28-19, and South Carolina beat LSU 29-5.

In the final, Tennessee ran out to a 19-12 halftime lead, but one of USC's strengths has been their overall team fitness, and it came into play here, as the Gamecocks scored three unanswered tries to win.

Spare a though for Mississippi State, which won the Bowl and finished the day 3-2, with their only losses by one point and two points, respectively.

Thus ends the preliminary tournaments in the SCRC series. The next event is the finals in Tupelo, Miss. April 11. The winners will get qualification to both the USA Rugby Collegiate 7s Championships, and the CRC invitational in Chester, Pa. USC has stated that they plan only to play in the CRC. So it is possible that the SCRC runners up will go to the USA Rugby event in Denver.
