Seven Tries for Army in Win over Stony Brook
The West Point men defeated Stony Brook 49-3 Friday at Army's Anderson Rugby Complex.
Stony Brook in fact took an early lead, but after a Jake Lachina try in the 7th minute, the Black Knights took a lead they would not relinquish. Scrumhalf Harrison Farrell added a try, and then No. 8 Jareth Long-Garrett scored twice to make it - with flyhalf Jon Kim's four conversions - 28-3 at halftime.
Army hit hard right after the restart, with Lachina scoring less than a minute into the second half. Inside center Luke Heun broke through the Stony Brook defense for a try, and then, with 17 minutes to go, prop Conner Parker thundered through for Army's last try. Kim was perfect on his kicking, knocking over a team record seven out of seven conversions.
It was a big day for Parker, who was playing his first game at prop after converting from lock. It was also a big day for Kim, who joined the Army rugby team last year after being a kicker for the football team. Obviously he showed his kicking skills, but he also displayed a calm demeanor at flyhalf and operated the offense nicely.
"It was our first game of the year and we have lots to work on," said Army Head Coach and former Cal and USA flyhalf Matt Sherman. "We put in a good effort and good physicality, and our attacking shape was very good. But our discipline let us down."
Army gave up over 20 penalties and spent half the game or more a man down due to yellow cards. That kind of penalty trouble will translate into losses as the season wears on if not fixed, Sherman said.
