San Diego Mustangs Down Visiting Snow Canyon
The San Diego Mustangs defeated Te Mana Rugby (Snow Canyon), which visited Southern California from Utah.
The #12-ranked Mustangs ran out to a 34-0 lead at halftime over the #17-ranked Snow Canyon team. Wing Ryan Velanzano scored three tries in the game while lock Dylan Fortune piled up many long charges through the Te Mana defense.
The Mustangs scored early and played an effective wide game that kept Snow Canyon backpedaling and trying to seal up gaps. In the second half the tourists buckled down and outscored San Diego, but the Mustangs had too much of a cushion.
"Snow Canyon has had our number many times in our long history with them," said Mustangs Coach Ramon Samaniego. "They test us in every facet, and we enjoy the stout competition. Our boys trained well this week, and the result today was a testament to their hard work."
The key for San Diego was probably their defense. They have been working hard at that part of their game, said the coaches, and it was their defensive work that set the platform for the scoring drives.
The Mustangs followed that game up with a 42-7 defeat of OMBAC in league play.
