Red River Latest - OU Faces Arkansas
Arkansas takes on Oklahoma this weekend in a rematch of an early Red River clash, and it's the last chance, really, for the Razorbacks to knock off a big opponent.
In the previous game, OU won 48-25 and put themselves back into conference contention. And a week ago Oklahoma beat Texas Tech in a game that Head Coach Doug Neubauer said was important psychologically.
"We needed to know that our loss to Tech in the fall was not normal," said Neubauer. "We had four starters available that weren’t in the first match, and the pace of the game showed it. Our forwards controlled the game and we attacked well wide and tight. We still have plenty of work to do as it was the first game of the spring and we will be back at it this week."
This week, of course, being an Arkansas team that is 1-3 in a series of close games. The big problem for Arkansas, which lost its second close one to Baylor Jan 21, is that Corey Jones was injured just before their Jan 21 game against Baylor, and flyhalf Jack Casey apparently left it too late to transfer his CIPP registration from his semester abroad in Scotland in time for that game. So without a key finisher and a key playmaker, they needed to shuffle things around.
However, shuffling ot not, said Head Coach Warren Fyfe, "we really should have won the game [against Baylor]." Arkansas had two tries disallowed that Fyffe felt should have counted. That was basically the difference right there. Last weekend, Arkansas played Arkansas State and lost 48-15 in a competitive effort.
Now, added the coach, "I feel that we have a good chance for OU. Even though we are struggling with illness this week we should be able to field a strong side Saturday and with Jack back in the lineup we are significantly better. We had a good game against Arkansas State last weekend; the game was closer than reflected in the score and it was our best result against A-State in years. We have matured mentally and physically so I'm hoping this will carry over into this weekend's game."
Oklahoma can improve to 5-1 with a victory. Also on the slate, LSU is heavily favored over Texas and looks to improve to 5-0. The Texas Tech v TCU game has been postponed due to the tragic death of Texas Tech captain Quinn Noel.
