Red Mountain Still at Arizona Summit
Red Mountain Still at Arizona Summit
The Arizona HS rugby league got all heated up as the two top teams met in 90-degree temperatures.
Red Mountain defeated Scottsdale 55-12 Saturday morning to ensure they are tops in the league.
The game was a little closer than that in the first half, as Scottsdale brought a physical approach to the contest and defended well. Red Mountan's forwards worked hard and were able to provide enough good ball for flyhalf Kristian Sanchez. That led to three tries for Red Mountain, all in the backs, and a 17-5 lead at the break.
Red Mountain started to win more possession at the breakdown in the second half, but a mistake inside their own 22 allowed Scottsdale to close the gap to 17-12. After that, though, Red Mountain cruised, scoring six tries, with No. 8 and captain Ryan Hakes playing superbly in the rucks and also scoring three of those six.
The victory ensures that Red Mountain will be the #1 seed in the state semifinals, with the likely other semi being between Scottsdale and Desert Vista.
