RBMA Looks for 4-0 in Florida

The big game in Florida Youth Rugby's Boys HS DI has to be Riviera Beach Maritime Academy at Orlando.

RBMA is 3-0 and Orlando is 2-1 and in this very tight and competitive Florida league, already these clashes are starting to carry some weight.

For Riviera Beach, the season started with two very, very close wins, before they exploded for 56 points against Naples.

"We had a bit of a different strategy this year than last year," said RBMA Coach David Sellepack. "Over the last two years we played outside of the league games as much as we could. This year we decided that since we had so many returners we were going to try to keep our team a little more quiet than last year and have the boys in better condition. This means we did not scrimmage or play any games until the start of the official season. We almost paid for that since the tradeoff is being rusty, but it seems to be working out."

So some adjustments were needed as they entered the season, and even more so as Sellepack moved around his backline. Flyhalf Riory Cicciru went to scrumhalf, and outside center John Selleack stepped in to play flyhalf. that left a new midfield pairing of Lukem Beaumont and Jerry Sosa. The speedy Devarious Miller remains are fullback and he's a danger slotting into the line, and helping find space for wings Billy Williams and Avante Thompson.

"This is a very experienced backline at this point, in terms of high school rugby, and they are very fast," said Sellepack. "I see this as our strength in the Orlando game coming up."

RBMA's pack is somewhat light and Orlando's size could trouble them. So it could well be a question of how much the Riviera Beach backs can do with limited ball.

Still, led by flankers Chase McKinnis and Bo Jackson, they have pace up front, roo.

"Our tight five will have their work cut out for them," warned Sellepack. "If we can stay loose and fast the game will go well for us; if we get caught in a lot of physical play there could be issues."

The other 3-0 team, Tampa, takes on 0-2 West Pines, while 1-1 Cape Pirates face 0-3 Naples (perhaps the biggest surprise of the Florida season so far). Okapi (1-0) is still in position to make a surge, and will do so against 3-0 Jupiter in another big one. Daytona Beach (0-3) plays Key Biscayne (0-2).

In DII, 2-0 Pompano has started very well but will be tested by 1-0 St. Thomas Aquinas. Sebastian River and Cardinal Gibbons are both looking for their first win, while Boca Raton can pounce if Pompano slips.
