Quinnipiac University has announced that it will discontinue women's rugby as a NCAA varsity spot, and will instead add men's distance running to their list of spots.

This announcement comes as a blow in part because Quinnipiac was among the first NCAA programs and Head Coach Rebecca Carlson has been at the forefront of pushing for full NCAA for women's rugby.

A press release said, in part: “Following a comprehensive review of varsity participation, conference affiliation, department resources, and gender equity considerations, Quinnipiac will add a men’s indoor and outdoor distance program enhancing participation opportunities within the existing track and field structure and will transition women’s rugby from varsity to club status at the conclusion of the current competitive cycle.”

The school said it would still provide resources to the rugby club.

The response was swift from Quinnipiac's most well-known rugby alumnus, Ilona Maher. The 2017 MA Sorensen winner, 7s and 15s Eagle, and the most-followed in social media rugby player on the planet, Maher posted on an Instagram story a screenshot of the press release with the tag "Shame on You."

Somehow Quinnipiac says that this change, which is part of an "athletics realignment" will help with Title IX compliance. How eliminating a women's contact sport in favor of a men's sport does that is unclear.
