Queens Take Men's DII College Throne
Queens University Charlotte capped off a massive season with a dominating 74-8 defeat of Wisconsin-Whitewater Sunday in the men’s DII college final.
The Royals finished the fall 9-1, the only blemish being a non-league loss to Southern Virginia (33-28). In every other game Queens scored at least 50 points, and topped 70 six times, including in both the semifinal and final this weekend.
Queens were just too quick for Whitewater, and with No. 8 Dominic Tianga back after a suspension for a red card (he missed two playoff games), they used the compact, powerful loose forward to bull through Whitewater’s big defenders.
Queens also won the game tactically, with the key approach being not to rush up on defense unless they were defending their line. In the middle of the field, the Royals were a bit more cautious, and what that did was give Whitewater’s forwards especially a head of steam. Then the tackles came and the Whitewater support was a step or two behind.
That allowed Queens to slow ball or steal.
Those counter-attacks turned into scoring opportunities, and Tianga was the main beneficiary, blasting into tacklers and going over for three tries.
Flanker Benji Hund did much the same and it was just too much for Whitewater. They would get out of trouble, only to see Queens steal the ball and go right back on the attack.
The onslaught continued, but the Royals were able to stretch the defense and backs Zion Thomas and Thomas Keay scored.
Whitewater never backed down and scored a nicely-taken try late, but this was all Queens.
It was all Queens, and it has been all Queens all season.
