Panther U18s win once again.

The Panther Rugby Academy capped off four National Youth Rugby 7s wins in a row over the weekend, capping off an astonishing run for the coaching staff and the veteran players.

This year's group was a mix of veterans and newcomers to the Panther Academy, with Andrew Ryan and Jake Orefice garnering their fourth titles, and Wyatt Appleton, Elijah Pimental, and Trace Snellman claining their third and second.

This year also gave PRA players Uate Pifeleti and Seon Kumar a second bite at the apple, as they had lost in OT last year in the Championship match as U16s.

The remainder of the squad was built through the Panther's growth out west with four players from California. Amosa Segai and Timoci Baikeirewa joined from SAC Air, Andrew Takapautolo from EPA Razorbacks, and Zion Vaea from Granite Bay Rugby Club.

This group was once again led by the coaching duo of Gary Anderson (University of Kentucky) and David Katz (Former NYAC, USMC).  They have been with some of these players since U14s.

Day 1 Pool Play saw the side start fast but go down a man in the first match when Orefice was injured. He would not return until the second half of the semifinal on Saturday.

The remaining ten players took up the mantle, with Snellman, Appleton, Amosa, and Vaea, leading the way with several fourteen-minute shifts each.

The entire squad came through with instant and electric offense led by Takapautolo, Pifeleti, Kumar, Pimental and Ryan. On the weekend every player scored, and several boys had multi-try matches. Vaea was dynamic in the air all weekend giving PRA several extra possessions off the restarts kicked by Snellman and Pifeleti.

On Day Two, the Panthers faced Gorilla Rugby in the semifinals, a familiar foe who always brings a high level of talent and intensity. This match was no different. Gorilla took advantage of two poorly defended kickoffs, scoring tries at the start of both halves.

The Panthers were able to regroup, and with a well-worked penalty play moving the ball through several hands, Pimental (the weekend's try leader) touched it down for the win on the final play of the match. This victory pushed the Panthers through to a place in the final versus a strong Sandhill Sharks team.

After the last-minute semifinal win, the Panthers had to refocus and they did that, working on the basics of strong defensive play and winning possession.

On attack, the Panthers took the opening kickoff down the touchline through a quick Orefice-Vaea give-and-go for a Vaea try. Then, less than a minute later, Appleton scored off Sandhill’s lineout miscue and went 60 meters for the second try of the match.

The tone was set early. The Panther defense continued to lead to offense with five other players touching down: Ryan, Snellman, Pifeleti, Takapautolo, and Baikeirewa.

"First and foremost I want to thank Pat Rahill and the entire NY7's staff for another great event," said Panther Board Member Michael Orefice. "The talent they brought in this year was solid top to bottom in every age group. PRA had a great weekend, winning the Cup in 18s and Plate (5th Place) in both 16s and 14s. I believe we have some of the best Rugby 7s coaches in the country and it makes my job easier to get these young men and their parents to commit to our program."

“It has been an incredible run," added Head Coach Gary Anderson. "We have had a remarkable core group of athletes who have achieved Championship success in each of those four years. Furthermore, we have cultivated exceptional relationships with San Mateo, Sac Air, Cavemen, and LCA. These partnerships, and the caliber of their athletes, have been pivotal to our success not only at National Youth 7s, but Tropical 7s as well.”
