NY Kicks Off HS Sevens; More from Other States Too

Play Rugby fielded a total of three teams in Rugby NY's 7s opener.

Boys HS 7s is in action around the USA; here's a look.

New York

Rugby NY opened their fall HS 7s season with Pelham going 3-0 on the day.

Also in action, PlayRugby fielded two teams, going 2-1 and 1-2 with their two teams.

New Rochelle/Albany combined with NYRC for the first day of competition, and went 0-3.

Davitt Barrett, Leo Venables, and Massimo Pietranco led the Pelham effort, while PlayRugby got big performances from Jaydon Matos and Kyan McKeown-Green. Despite not getting any wins, NR/NY/Albany did see a solid performance from Colton Bell.

As usual in New York, they run a JV season and Pelham's Beckett Pierce and Antime Lemione led the Pelham JVs to a 4-0 day.

Hew Johnson was also strong for Pelham as they beat PlayRugby twice and New Rochelle twice. Those two other teams split their games with each other, ending up 1-3.

Indiana

Brownsburg has emerged as a serious contender this fall with wins over Westside, Culver, Noblesville, Westside, and Mudsock. They did tie Westfield this past weekend, but a 5-0-1- record has them in good shape, with Isaac Jones featuring heavily on the scoresheet.

For their part Westside has just that one loss, and has beaten Culver, Nobelsville, Carmel (twice), and Zionsville. Zionsville is a contender as well, but there is plenty of rugby to be played.

Ohio

St. Ignatius leads in the North. Fielding six (!) teams, the Cleveland-area school beat both major rivals, St. Edward and Medina, comfortably with their A side, while their B side beat Perrysburg but were upended by Highland. Ignatius A did the job despite losing one of their co-captains to injury the week before.

For their part, Highland ran the table this past weekend, beating Ignatius B, Hudson, and Medina.

Down South St. Xavier is fielding four (!) teams and their A side beat Dublin 50-0, Moeller 35-12, and Moeller B 36-5 this past weekend. Keep an eye on Dayton Northern Force, which beat Marysville in dramatic fashion, Walnut Hills, and Dublin B to go 3-0 this past weekend.

For Northern Force, Dakota Faulkner, Tony Mack, and Graham Jordan have all been very good, while scrumhalf and captain Noah Allen runs the attack nicely.

Faulkner is usually in the midfield and uses his experience with not only Dayton but EIRA Midwest, Ohio Aviators, USA South Panthers, and Midwest Thunderbirds to set the offensive tone. Mack sets things up as first receive and also has select-side experience. Jordan is a transfer from Moeller and plays some prop, some flyhalf, and always runs hard lines.

The core of this team has been together since 3rd Grade. "They’ve gelled as well as many teams I’ve had that have won championships," said Head Coach Matt Tracey. "I’m blessed to have a crew like this. Great experience, very tight, and pushing each other on the daily to get better and vie for each others spots."

For St. X, they started the season without their regular flyhalf, who will miss the season due to a non-contact injury. But with Phil Bottomley a physical presence at prop and Alex Samson providing a spark on the wing they've done just fine, thank you.

Transfer student Sebastian Nies has elevated the team's attack at scrumhalf, while Oliver Weidner has emerged as a talented player who understands how th game flows. With wing Andrew Fitzpatrick due back from injury St. Xavier should be a bit deeper going into the next tournament where they play Northern Force.

Utah

Layton Christian has dominated in the Beehive State, going 9-0 in the first three weekends. They've had a few close calls—both Kearns and East HS were within a try—but they doubled the number of tries against perennial contenders Herriman three times, scoring four tries to two each time. Olympus, Herriman, and East are all vying for 2nd, but none of these three has been able to crack the Layton code.

West Valley and AF Cavemen lead Tier 2

Layton Christian's experience playing in the Tropical 7s and the NAI 7s have given them a leg up back home in Utah. Big, strong forward Metui Kaufusi also has pace, while Francis Hiliau has been dominant all around the field. Siaki Fekitoa has skill and speed and with the experience of Justin Sau and Talin Dunyon mixed in they are very solid this fall.

"Most of all we've got players in the forwards that can make things happen and we feel we’re balanced in both the forwards and the backline," said Head Coach Tongia Vaitaki. While Herriman, East, and Olympus are a bit more challenging, LCA has taken care of business everywhere.

"Overall our boys can show up and perform, especially Siaki Fekitoa in the backline; he can make the impossible possible."

New Jersey

Just one tournament so far this fall, and St. Augustine is in 1st after beating Christian Brothers Academy 26-12. The Hermits were pushed by Morris in the semis and that team took 3rd.

In the U16s Christian Brothers Academy is leading and Connecticut's Greenwich HS in 2nd. Those two faced off in the opening tournament final with CBA taking away a quite impressive 31-5 victory.

Pennsylvania

Conestoga now sits atop the RugbyPA standings with an impressive 12-1 record, going 3-0 in their latest tournament while contenders Bishop Shanahan faltered somewhat. Shanahan, Berks County, St. Joe's, Lasalle, and Cumberland Valley are all in a virtual tie for the second-best record.

Conestoga hasn't lost a game since Round 1.
