Notes and Stats After Eagles Win
Notes and Stats After Eagles Win
Some notes and thoughts on Monday's game against Canada.
This was the first time that the Eagles had won a game without scoring a try since July 4 2009, when they beat Canada in Charleston 12-6. Those are the only two times the USA has won a game without scoring a try.
This was only the 19th game in which the USA had kicked a drop goal. The USA is the least drop-goal-likely international rugby team, although the Eagles' frequency of drop goals has increased somewhat in the last 16 years. Only Mike Hercus has kicked more than two drop goals in a test match, and he has four. With AJ MacGinty's game-winner Monday, he is the 14th USA player to kick a drop goal in internationals.
He is also the first to ever win a game with a drop goal. The Eagles are 10-9 in games where they hit a drop goal. There are three players (guess which ones) who have kicked more international drop goals than the USA has as a team.
With Monday's victory, USA Head Coach Mike Tolkin is now 10-17-1. He is the third USA coach to achieve 10 victories, following Tom Billups (12-20) and Jack Clark (16-32). He is 2-4 against Canada, but has won twice in a row, a feat last accomplished by Billups in his Rugby World Cup year of 2003 (and that included a close win over the Canadians in British Columbia, 16-11).
Below is video of comments from Tolkin and captain Chris Wyles, who gets to discuss MacGinty's decision to hit the drop goal. If you don't see the video embedded, please refresh the page.
