NorCal Latest - Jesuit and More

Jesuit HS out of Sacramento has secured 1st in the Single-School league in Northern California with a 56-24 defeat of Clayton Valley and then followed that up with a forfeit win over De La Salle to move to 8-0.

Clayton Valley is 7-2, with their only losses being to Jesuit. Jesuit now will play the winner of a play-in game between Clayton Valley and Dixon for the Rugby NorCal Single-School title.

They won’t be waiting, though, as on Tuesday they play Westlake, a touring school team from New Zealand, and then on Wednesday they play the England Independent Schools Lambs select side (who lost to Northern California's select side on Sunday), and then a day later it’s New Plymouth out of New Zealand.

The three-day crunch of games comes at a time when injuries and other responsibilities are depleting their roster. Three starting Jesuit backs are out injured. Head Coach John Shorey said this then becomes a good test for his younger players to show if they can step up to the higher level.

Shorey has been big about testing his players in anticipation of the National Invitational Championship, which requires three games in three days. This week will be one of those tests.

Meanwhile, in the Multi-School division, Jesuit sits 6-0 and will take on Granite Bay April 11 for 1st in the Sac Conference. Then it’s on to the playoffs. April 18 is the Northern California single-school final (Jesuit v Dixon or Clayton Valley), and that day is also the multi-school quarterfinals, with the semis on April 19. Jesuit won’t play in the multi-school playoffs as their school prohibits playing on a Sunday.

So, on current form, the multi-school final on April 25 will likely be between Danville and Granite Bay, but watch out for Peninsula Green.

This past weekend in the multi-school league, Sierra Foothills kept pace with the top teams in the Sac Conference with a 59-17 defeat of Vacaville.

North Bay won a wild one, 39-38 over Hayward, and they did it by dominating possession and reducing the amount of time Naima Fualaau got the ball - the Hayward back is a talent, and scored at least four tries. North Bay is now 3-2 and has one more game, against Lamorinda. But they won't catch 4-2 Peninsula Green, who won 52-14 over Pleasanton. Hayward, thanks to a forfeit from Oakland, moves up to 4-2 and takes 2nd in the Bay Conference. Everyone is chasing Danville, who are ranked #1 among HS clubs in the nation by Goff Rugby Report. Danville is 6-0.
