NIRA DI Suspends Fall Play
NIRA DI Suspends Fall Play
The National Intercollegiate Rugby Association, the NCAA varsity women's rugby league, will suspend play for the fall in its DI competition.
With the Ivy League and NEC having suspended their conference play in other sports, that essentially makes the decision for six of the eight teams in the conference. Brown, Dartmouth, and defending champs Harvard are in the Ivy League. Long Island University, Mount Saint Mary's, and Sacred Heart are in the NEC. The MAAC, the home of Quinnipiac, suspended non-conference games.
That's enough, though, as the regular season and the playoffs are canceled for the fall.
The following teams are affected:
Brown University – Ivy League
Dartmouth College - Ivy League
Harvard University - Ivy League
Long Island University - Northeast Conference (NEC)
Mount Saint Mary's University - Northeast Conference (NEC)
Quinnipiac University - Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC)
Sacred Heart University - Northeast Conference (NEC)
Army West Point has not canceled its season. While the conference its other sports play in, the Patriot League, has canceled for the fall, but West Point and the US Naval Academy are exempted because they are in unique situations. So it's possible Army will play some rugby.
NIRA DI athletic directors will begin discussions on potential options for spring 2021.
