New Zealand Beats USA WNT, Wins Super Series

The New Zealand Black Ferns rode a dominat second half to beat the USA 47-14 in the Women's Super Series in Alberta Sunday, capping off a 3-0 run.

The Eagles led early in the first half and were within a point at the break, but little erros undercut what was a fairly encouraging performance by the United States, and handed victory to New Zealand.

The Black Ferns scored first, as Victoria Subritski-Nafatali went in at the corner. But the USA exploited some New Zealand penalties and hard work by their forwards to get an attacking lineout. However, that lineout went for nought. It wasn't until Jess Wooden went on a run and No. 8 Jordan Gray poached the ball that they were able to pound the line and, finally, send prop Hope Rogers over. Kimber Rozier's kick made it 7-5 USA.

New Zealand, though, were generally quicker to the ball in the breakdown and hit the gain line hard. They score two more tries, while the USA execution at key moments, especially on the lineout, was found wanting. Down 15-7 the Eagles got a try back when the backs worked it wide to wing Kelsi Stockert, one of several players who made their debuts at this tournament, and the Washington state native beat the cover defense raced into the corner and around near the posts. Rozier was good on the kick.

But in the second half errors started to creap into the USA game. A pop kick to no one from Wooden ended up begin run in. A promising break ended with a forward pass. Sotckert had another try there for the taking but couldn't find the handle on Rozier's offload.

Meanwhile, New Zealand made no such errors, and started to roll.

In the end it was 47-14, but perhaps the score flattered the Black Ferns a shade. The USA played well, especially in the first half, and Head Coach Pete Steinberg has to feel somewhat pleased with the performances of so many young players.

Meanwhile, England edged Canada 15-14 in a tight one to secure 2nd. USA, by virtua of having beaten Canada, finished 3rd (see standings below)
