Navy, UConn Round Out CRAA Women D1 Final Four
The CRAA Women's D1 semifinals are ready for November 19 at the US Naval Academy as both UConn and Navy won games this weekend.
UConn got by Virginia with a late try to win 10-5. The try came after a long period of pressure where the Hokies held out desperately. Finally the Huskies were able to get it over in the corner.
It was almost as close with Navy vs Air Force. Navy beat Air Force 12-3. It was a young Air Force side that kept it close and put in a brave performance.
But for Navy, they handled the cold well.
"You could definitely tell it was a playoff game," said Navy Head Coach Murphy McCarthy. "And it was two service academies going at it."
Navy scored early through Marissa Meyer but struggled to put their attack together as the game went on. Still, led by captains Eliza Herring in the forwards and Nicole Deprey they kept Air Force's attack at bay.
Herring scored a key try early in the second half to make it, with Deprey's conversion, a two-score game. Deprey's kicking from hand helped control field position and seal the game for Navy.
"Hats off to Air Force," said McCarthy. "They played tough and for 80 minutes; that was a battle."
Connecticut will take on Utah State November 19 while Navy will face Northeastern. Those tour teams will shoot for the CRAA Women's D1 championship, which will be decided at CRAA's Fall Classic on December 3 at the Matthews Sportsplex in the Charlotte, NC area.
