National Youth 7s Championship Set to Kick Off This Weekend
The 2nd annual National Sevens Youth Rugby Championships are set for this weekend in Cleveland, Ohio, with some high-level competition on the slate.
In the Girls Tier, Belmont Shore, Rhinos, and two teams from the Cleveland Rugby Academy face off. Belmont Shore won the tournament last year with a highly-skilled side that is now forming the nucleus of their very successful high school 7s program.
In the Boys Tier II, Cleveland Rugby Academy and Ohio Youth champs West Park are the local contenders, but there's talent from all over. Celina out of Texas joins CRA in Pool A along with USA South Red. This South program sent three teams to the Tropical 7s U14 bracket, and this Nationals roster could bring the best of those players in one team.
In Pool B, West Park is joined by LoCo, the Loudoun County youth program in Virginia. A very successful youth program, LoCo was was 3rd in Virginia in 15s. And the Rhinos program out of Southern California is likely a favorite. Rhinos won the Tropical 7s U14 bracket last year.
The Tier I Boys division features 2021 champions Rhinos Rugby leading Pool A.
Under Coach Craig Hartley the Rhinos defeated Eagle Impact Rugby Academy in the final, and could well meet EIRA this time around. Rhinos join the Charlotte Tigers, the top youth team in North Carolina, and the LA Tribe. The Tribe is part of the Los Alamitos program in Southern California and brings a ton of talent.
In Pool B, USA South Blue joins Belmont Shore and EIRA. Belmont Shore has shown some excellent results in building 7s tournaments this spring, and EIRA made the final last year. USA South draws from all around the region and their U16 team won their bracket at the Tropical 7s.
Here is the current schedule. The games will be played on the campus of St. Ignatius HS in Cleveland.
