The 5’11”, 180 lb. center was chosen for her outstanding performance this season, leading the Wildcats in its first varsity season with 13 tries (65 points). That feat was no small achievement in and of itself. New coach Mel Denham, who had migrated from varsity American International College this year, recruited a densely talented squad rife with all-star and international experience, and Serevi still managed to distinguish herself.

 

“She played 13 for us this season, leading our wide attack,” Denham said. “Nate's size, innate handling skills and playmaking ability are quite unique in the women's college game, and make her a major threat with ball in hand.”

 

Serevi is a very exciting, creative player – something one might expect from the King of 7s’ progeny – but considering that the Seattle native has played on so many clubs, all-star teams, and developmental squads, the teenager understands team roles.

 

“Nate exemplifies the high qualities of a great teammate and athlete,” Denham said. “She is a natural leader on and off the field, constantly looking for ways to improve herself, her teammates and the team as a whole.”

 

The award is good press for the women's team, which is only halfway through its season thus far. Although new to division one, Central Washington has distinguished itself as the forerunner in Pacific Mountain North.

 

“It's very exciting for the rugby program in its first varsity year,” Denham said. “To have one of our student-athletes nominated and then voted Female Student Athlete of the Fall truly demonstrates the legitimacy of varsity rugby at Central Washington.”

 

The conference will resume in January 2015.
