Naples, Orlando Clinch Semi Berths in Florida
The playoff matchups are all set in Florida Youth Rugby’s Boys HS leagues as this past weekend’s results solidified who won their pools.
Orlando defeated Cape Pirates 24-11 in a tough clash to finish 5-1 and win the North Pool. Meanwhile, Daytona was shocked 17-16 by previously-winless Tampa Krewe. It’s been a tough season for the Krewe in that they have been very competitive with their opponents, but haven’t been able to eke out a victory - until Saturday.
This was a crucial loss for Daytona as it tied them with the Pirates at 3-3. Cape Pirates take 2nd due to head-to-head (they split their games, but the Pirates won their game by nine points, and Daytona won theirs by only two). The Pirates go on to play for the Plate.
Weston and Riviera Beach both had already clinched their pools, leaving the South 1 in doubt with 5-0 Naples facing 4-1 Key Biscayne.
Key Biscayne Coach Nicolas Siegal said his team went into the game a little unsure of how they would bounce back from some idle weekends, but on the plus side, they welcomed back some injured players as well as Marcos Young, back from the HS All American U17 tour to Europe.
But Naples won 26-14 to clinch the pool.
‘Key Biscayne are a very good team,” said Naples Coach Paul Rokela. “They have good balance - a lot of skill and size in the forwards. They have a lot of flair and we needed to negate that a bit, which we did.”
Naples is a young team but, said Rokela, smart and coachable.
“They practice their tails off and it shows,” he said.
Flyhalf Brandon Rokela showed well - his kicking from the hand and the tee helped Naples get some good field position. Young lock Rory MacLeod was outstanding in tight and roams the field more like a tanker, while Ellis Cole is a powerful No. 8 who probably pans out as a prop at higher levels.
“The guys have been working better and better in the system we’re building, and we’re pretty pleased to be in the Cup playoffs now,” said Rokela.
Meanwhile Orlando got tries from Harry Allen, Anthony Coello, Hiram Miranda, and JC Rojas.
"The forwards fronted up big-time in this game," said Orlando Coach Chris Quigley.
No. 8 Anthony Coello was monstrous all day long and the pack stopped the Pirates in the interior channels.
Flanker Jimmy Davis, who at 6-4 is usually a lock, slotted in at flanker to fill in for an injured Josue Ayala, and was a defensive force.
"I have not seen a player dominate defensively like that in a while," said Quigley.
Zachery Dambaugh was an effective impact sub and helped Orlando finish strong.
And so Orlando will face Riviera Beach Maritime Academy next week in the semis, while Naples takes on Weston. The final will be played a week later.
The second-place teams also play off, with the Cape Pirates facing Jupiter and Key Biscayne playing Cardinal Gibbons.
