Mixed Result for Davenport
Davenport continued to impress last Saturday, as the team defeated DI Michigan 54-0. The victory marked a nice rebound after the 15-6 loss to DI Lindenwood in late March.
“The game was much closer than the score showed,” Davenport coach Greg Teliczan commented. “They were very physical and very big. We came up big on the Michigan tryline three times in the first 30 minutes, which helped. They are very well coached and will be trouble down the road.”
The Panthers built a 22-point lead thanks to tries from Brittany O’Dell, Jennifer Harig and Ashlee Byrge, who also added a conversion. Danielle Ordway slotted a penalty and conversion, but the All American didn’t have time to rack up any more points. The team’s high scorer was hauled off of the field in the first half, suffering “a pretty scary injury,” according to Teliczan.
Although shaken, the team regrouped in the second half and sent underclassmen Makala Ferguson, Taylor Van Langen, Amy Plambeck, Melissa Francis and Hunter Moreland over for tries. Byrge added two more conversions and a penalty to lead with 14 points.
Davenport logged a solid win, but the loss of Ordway is a concern.
“That really hurts us as far as 7s goes,” Teliczan said of the dynamic finisher and goal-kicker. “I'll have to do some shuffling around. We already have so many injuries, it’s going to be tough to restructure.”
The Panthers will make its adjustments this weekend, as the team competes at the Falcon 7s in Euclid, Ohio. The following weekend sees DU at the Big Ten 7s, and then the ACRA 7s championship will be held May 2-3 in West Point, N.Y.
