Mira Costa Holds Off La Costa Canyon
The Mira Costa Mustangs took to their home stadium pitch on a chilly Saturday night against La Costa Canyon and came away with a tight victory over LCC in SCIRF play.
The Mustangs were coming off their first ever win over the Saints of St. Augustine 27-19 the week before. It was a huge team effort for the Mustangs despite the fact that outside center Pablo Pasqual scored all the points. He knocked over penalty goals from 48 and 38 meters, and added three tries, including two long-range interceptions, and converted all three.
However, the Mustangs were fully aware that the Mavericks from La Costa Canyon had beaten St. Augustine the week before.
Costa opened the scoring when they received a penalty around midfield. Pasqual promptly drilled the 50-meter kick to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead. The lead was short-lived, however, as LCC was awarded a penalty 11 meters from the Mira Costa tryline. The Mavericks took advantage and scored, converting to try to take a 7-3 lead which would last until the break.
Mira Costa came out of halftime playing some strong defense. With the Mustangs pressuring the Mavericks deep inside their own red zone, Luke Meeker forced a turnover and scored from si meters out. Pasqual converted and MIra Costa led 10-7.
Still it remained a close game, but Mira Costa put it away with a four-meter plunge from prop Cash Lahive for his first-ever Mira Costa try. Pasqual converted giving the Costa Mustangs a 17-7 win.
Next up for Mira Costa is Fallbrook, while LCC plays Warren HS.
