Aside from a couple of warmup games, the men's D2 college season hasn't really kicked off yet.
That's understandable. Teams are still building and preparing, and it's not as if too many of them can get their players on campus early.
Still this weekend, the first weekend fully in September, has at least eight games on the slate.
The Northern Lights are getting going early and it's good to see more league games there. Defending champs MSU Mankato hosts North Dakota State, while UM-Duluth, perhaps their stiffest rival, visits Winona State. Like a lot of leagues, the Northern Lights has teams play in a conference where there are teams in different divisions. Winona State is a D3 side, for example, and you'll see in the schedule listed below that there are some games with italicized team names. Those teams are not in D2.
The Allegheny starts up also with defending national D2 champs IUP hosting a very tough Slippery Rock side and West Virginia at Robert Morris. Again, WVU and IUP are D2, while RMU and Slippery Rock are D3. Liberty's league kicks off Sunday with Cornell at Albany.
That's a small list of games. Meanwhile, next week we'll see over 50 teams in action. Overall we have at least 250 games on our list involving D2 teams. And that's before the playoffs start.
