We're running down the playoff picture on Men's DII college conferences and now it's time to look at the South, with the Southern, SCRC, and Cardinals conferences.

Men DII College Playoff Picture: The Northeast

Southern

The Southern Premier League has been a massive success, as games among the stronger teams in the region have been more competitive.

That is all the more reason to be impressed with Furman’s performance, as the Paladins have gone 4-0 so far and allowed less than 12 points per game. North Carolina is a solid second with UNC-Wilmington and The Citadel after that.

There is a bit of a dropoff after the top two, and it’s likely that we’ll see at least the top two make the national championship playoffs. Historically, the lower seeds out of the Southern go into a play-in round before the Round of 16.

There are three weeks of games left in the Southern—there are no conference playoffs. Furman is favored to beat East Carolina and UNC-Wilmington, and should the Paladins do that, they will clinch 1st.

Cardinals

This is an intriguing race because the strongest team coming out of the Cardinals may well be the NSCRO team Southern Virginia. SVU beat Queens University in a non-conference game earlier this season.

As far as conference play goes, Queens and Virginia lead with 3-0 records. These two teams are facing off this weekend in a major clash.

SCRC

The SCRC split up this season going to a Tier I and a Tier II, with the Tier I playing, as usual, in DIA, and the 2nd tier playing in DII. This has been a boon to the conference as the games have been more competitive. (This is essentially the same decision the Southern made, splitting to DIA and DII versus DII and NSCRO, but it’s the same result.)

Middle Tennessee State and Memphis are 3-0 and won’t face off until November 2. With this being a new conference as far as DII is concerned, it’s a big question whether the runner-up gets a spot in the national playoffs. Both Memphis and MTSU, however, are solid.
