Men DI College Games This Weekend

It's a full and interesting slate of games in Men's DI College Rugby - here's a look.

In the NCRC (DIAA), Washington, Boise State, and Western Washington are all in a battle for 1st place. UW leads right now, but the Huskies still have three games to play. This one is a big one - 2-1-1 Boise State which is getting into a rhythm. Western Washington can pounce with a win over Western Oregon. The big games, likely, will be Washington State v. Eastern Washington, and Oregon v. Gonzaga, because those are the teams fighting to get into the 4th spot for the semis. If WSU wins, they the Cougars will be in excellent position take that place.

In the California Conference (DIA), Santa Clara and Cal Poly will face off to see who is the second-best team in that conference. The best? St. Mary's, no question, and while the Gaels might be beat up and a little ragged at the moment, they should beat UCSB.

The Red River Conference seems to be LSU's to win. Of course, they need to win the games, but the Tigers are 3-0, have beaten Oklahoma, and are favored over Texas Tech.

The Mid-South (DIA) kicks off this weekend with #5 Lindenwood v #4 Life. We preview that game here

The independent PAC Rugby Conference sees two classic rivalries, Cal v UCLA and Arizona v Arizona State. Cal has been his by injuries and will have a tough opponent in the Bruins.

“I’m really proud of how the team is responding to this bit of injury adversity,” Cal Head Coach Jack Clark said. “Our depth has mostly held up well, but UCLA is by far the biggest challenge we’ve had as banged up as we are.”

UCLA Coach Scott Stewart was a little frustrated by his team's 18-12 win over Arizona. "We started well," said Stewart, but a string of penalties and other stoppages hurt his team's flow. They have shown themselves to be capable of scoring tries, even against Cal.

And of course it's the great rivalry of Arizona and Arizona State. The teams both would like to leave the other in the dust, but they can never quite do that. The games they play are always close. The games they play against everyone else seem to produce similar results.

Coming out of that close loss to UCLA, Arizona Head Coach Sean Duffy said "we had a lot of opportunities and did some good things defensively against a very strong attacking side, but we need to be more clinical at the crucial times. I know this group will look back on this game as one that helped make us better."

In the Gold Coast, Long Beach State is closing its fist around the conference, but much like in the NCRC, it's the race for #4 that is getting interesting. Grand Canyon needs a win to be in position. San Diego could still instead CSULB, but likely the 49ers will prevail. That loss won't hurt USD too terribly much in the playoff race.

And in the Pacific Western, UC Davis is looking good.

"We have played a lot of teams that have been playing well," said UC Davis Coach Kal Incendy. "Our practices have been moving quicker to constantly challenge the players conditioning and we have introduced some new defensive concepts. By replacing the 12 starters that graduated last year, we had to reinforce the team culture ... The synergy and culture of the club seems to becoming better each week."

Of the non-conference games, Arkansas State v Davenport is, of course, the one with the highest-ranking opponents. Here's our preview. But you've also got BYU v Air Force, which will be streamed live here at 11:50am Mountain Time Saturday. "This is the height of the season," said BYU Head Coach David Smyth. "Every game will be a battle. But I like out team. They have a hunger about them and a good chemistry."

Navy renews their rivalry with a Dartmouth team that is just gearing up. The Big Green has speed and skill, but has to deal with the physicality and size of Navy.
