Memphis Makes 1st Move in SIRC
The South Independent conference season moves on this weekend with three games after the opening clash last weekend.
The first game of the season was actually canceled due to Hurricane Matthew, but last week a game did get played as Memphis shut out Georgia Tech 64-0.
This coming week, Memphis welcomes a tough Georgia Southern team, while in the southern division, South Florida is at Florida State, and North Florida is at Central Florida.
For Memphis, the shutout of Georgia Tech was a nice start to a season in which they have high hopes.
“We’ve got some good players and we started well with the first 7s tournament,” said Coach Richard Cole. “It was a good win for us.”
Captain Chris Lemons has led smartly. Jacob Scott has been a very good flyhallf so far for Memphis, and his kicking ability has been a nice boon to the squad. Inside center JT Henson is an outstanding runner, while hooker Must Banat is a force in the breakdown.
But what awaits Memphis is a competitive conference with the Georgia Southern Kennesaw State, and Middle Tennessee State all gunning for a SIRC North title.
October 22 SIRC games:
Georgia Southern at Memphis
North Florida at Central Florida
South Florida at Florida State
