Mary Washington Hosts Leicester Tigers Camp
Mary Washington Hosts Leicester Tigers Camp
The University of Mary Washington will be hosting a special weekend of coaching February 13-15, as seven members of the Leicester Tigers pro setup will be on campus to work with coaches and players.
Leicester is one of the most successful English pro clubs in history, and UMW Director of Rugby Tim Brown has established a good rapport with the club. Players and coaches will have access to UMW’s impressive athletic facilities.
Players pay a per-player fee or a per-team fee for eight or more. UMW has also announced that any high school rugby coach can attend by paying what he or she can afford.
“We are serious about the pay whatever you can plan,” said Brown. “The school is investing about $2 million in rugby facilities right in the kiddie of town. We have an exchange program with two different universities in Ireland. We have players and coaches coming from 12 states and three countries for this and we want to grow the game.”
The Tigers coaches have been impressed with UMW’s support - from the 1,500-2,000-fan attendance at games to the facilities. They are coming to help the game grow in the USA, but also to scout talent. Brown said he wants to raise the level of rugby, but also wants young players to know about his program.
Longtime Leicester Tiger player Ian Smith continues to contribute, now as a coach. |
